LA Noire is set in the 1940s, before the women’s rights and civil rights movments, so the behaviour of the characters represents the view of the dominant white, male viewpoint of the time, much like the films it draws inspiration from. Women are presented frequently as victims of male violence and abuse. Although Phelps is a product of his enviroment, he seems to feel compassion for abused women, and gets angry at the men who abused them – he’s least misogynistic than many of his other collegues, such as Rusty. Due to the attitudes in post war America, most people belonging to an ethinic minorty are shown in menial jobs of servitude, rather than positions of power or authority – there’s a notable lack of diversity in the game’s version of the LAPD, for example.

Does the game represent men and women in stereotypical ways? What about other categories – age and ethnicity for example? Time period? Setting?

One of the most notable parts of the game is the divide between the genders. Generally, the men of the game are active, while the women are passive. This is mainly due to the setting, and is realistic of the time period, where most women only worked until they got married and had children.

Ok, here are the final questions. This time you have a choice, so please post a response to one of these two by midnight on Monday April 30th:

Either: Film noir’s portrayal of the “femme fatale” supports the existing social order by building up a powerful, independent woman, only to punish her.

Does the game represent men and women in stereotypical ways? What about other categories – Time period? Setting?

Because the game is set in the 40′s, there is a certain stereotypical way in which the women are shown. For at the time it is set women weren’t equal with men and were seen to be subservient to men and ‘ditsy’. L.A. Noire shows this through the various women you meet during the cases. For starters there are a fair few cases in which the victim is a woman, showing how the men had the majority of the power at the time the game is set. When there are women giving statements and during interviews, they come across as less intelligent then the men in the game and some are very materialistic. Other than on the cases, there are no women involved in the game, once again showing how they were seen as less important at the time of the games setting.

Does the game represent men and women in stereotypical ways? What about other categories – age and ethnicity for example? Time period? Setting?

Due to the time setting of this game, which is in the 1940′s, there seems to be much different representations of gender to what people today are used to. For example, this game is mainly male dominated. There doesn’t seem to be any women in position of power which was typical of that time. In the 1940′s women were seen as second class citizens with less rights than men, and this maybe effecting their position in the game. Women in these times were to be housewives, stay at home, cook, clean, bear children and raise them. They typically didn’t have jobs outside the household. Also another main representation of men in this game is that they are the heroes, because with this old age of thinking, men were more capable of intelligence and ‘saving the day’ so to speak. In the 1940′s, men had much more rights than women did and due to this, they were able to get a job without being frowned upon. This was their role and I think this point illustrates itself in the game.

1. Does the game represent men and women in stereotypical ways? What about other categories – age and ethnicity for example? Time period? Setting?

Because the game was set in 1940′s America the representation of male and female characters are a lot different. Males are represented more in the game as they were the people who got jobs and worked hard to keep their families alive and healthy. Whilst women arent represented as much as they were thought to stay at home and look after their children and clean the house and sometimes doing unskilled labour such as becoming a receptionist. Age is also represented within the game as more older people are those with the high skilled jobs as they are reliable and have the knowledge and experience needed rather than younger people.

1. How far would you say you try and inhabit the ‘character’ you’re ‘playing’?

Whilst playing the game i try to inhabit the character i am playing as it makes it feel more realistic and makes me feel as though im actually helping characters within the game itself. Inhabiting the character you are playing gives you a better understanding, making you aware of what is going on and the shortcuts to the game will be unveiled. You as a player strive to complete the aspirations the character has in the game, making you become more involved with that character.

1. Please write character descriptions for any TWO interesting characters you have encountered in the game so far. These should be about 50 words each.

Cole Phelps:

Cole Phelps is voiced by actor Aaron Staton, Cole is the main character in L.A. Noire. He is a former member of the United States Marine Corps, who later returned from the war as a hero, joining the Los Angeles Police Department soon after. He rose through the ranks to become a Police detective. He likes to be professional and prefers to play it by-the-books rather than cutting corners, this creates issues between him and his more inaccurate partners. He has a clear understanding and knowledge and completes his jobs and cases to the best of his ability, he seems keen and eager about his work.

1. How far would you say you try and inhabit the ‘character’ you’re ‘playing’?

I somewhat try and inhabit the character the character that I play to get a feel of what the characters like and also to help with the game. The more you inhabit one character, the more you begin to understand their quirks which leads you to play the game a little better. If a character is supposed to have a really hard working nature, then you strive to be hardworking in the game and complete the game as if the characters were all real, and uphold the reputation the characters have.

Cole Phelps: Cole Phelps is the main protagonist of this video game. He seems to be a rather skilled dectective with good knowledge of what he does. He’s rather confident in what he does and is always eager to work. When looking into his background, he seems to have a had a relatively normal life, with a wife and two children, but at the same time he seems very concealed, but this maybe due to his military background.
