Final Question – Answering Option 2

L.A Noire incredulously shows the spirit of Los Angelas in many ways. It perfectly depicts the transparent themes from the Noir Genre from the very beginning, the menu interface brings you into the typical black and white feel of mystery with a silhouette of a man in the background and billowing steam transplants the feel further. For the characters the most obvious character being Phelps is the man vocal point that brings out the plot that makes a Noir film. A man in the force with a troubled past is faced with the new playground of being a cop, from a strangled relationship with being a soldier he is thrust into a world of discipline and the corrupt. The background of Phelps gives that idea of a hollowed out cop, not the typical straight faced man in a suit doing his job but someone we see through to the bone. We follow nothing except Phelp’s journey through the police force which makes it apparent with the Noir setting.

If we are to look further at other characters we see the Femme Fatale where women are constantly regarded with lower stature and disregarded by men all the time. They are the innocent pushed around by the male species. Noir films depict the early 20th century so it is no wonder that we see this side to L.A Noire.

What is interesting is the blatant comparison to Grim Fandango which I also think has similar themes except not so much in story but in the textual feel with music and the look. Grim Fandango heavily reminds me of something that I think L.A Noire was trying to do, in that music and the visual cues give a sense of the genre its depicting. The music in particular compensate that age of ‘beats’ through jazz which makes music an almost separate character that drives the game further along. This even leads to audio cues when Phelps is looking for clues, something that may be used within films to show that the character focused on something that ‘we’ must also focus on.

The structure of the plot gives a blinding resemblances also, each case giving more attention to the overall finale. Such as small information leading to the overall outcome.
