Week 3 questions


1. L.A Noire represents gender in a way that will be not be familiar to someone from modern times with no prior knowlegde to the 40s and how women were treated. In this sense it may be uncomfortable and also at the same time educational for the player to experience such a drastic difference in equality which has occured over the small period of time of 70 years. In the time period of L.A Noire mysogeny is a common thing where women had no equal rights and therefore are treated in some cases quite badly by a dominant male in the relationship. It could be said that this representation of men and women is very stereotypical although it I would say it is accurate for the time.

2. When it comes to how the game represents groups of people and places/situations compared to a novel or film I would say that to an extent the straighforward linear narrative in which a clear central protagonist is established is very similar to how a novel or film would represent these things. However even though the story is set and the game is programmed to end in a certain way the fact that you have control of the character to an extent will engross you in that character further than merely watching them on a screen or reading them from pages.

3. When it comes to narration there is only a narrator at the beginning of the game in order to establish the mood and feel of it and let the player know and be aware of the clear classic noir atmosphere and feel the game posesses. From this point on there is no narrator and it left clearly to the player to involve and invest themselves within the dark, gloomy atmospheric new york of the 1940s.
